Eligibility for Naturalization


1. Must be at least 18 years of age.

2. Must be a Legal Permanent Resident of the United States and:

a. have resided continuosly for 5 years in the U.S. subsequent to
your grant of lawful permanent resident status; or

b. if married to a U.S. citizen have resided continuously for 3 years
in the U.S. and have “lived in marital union” with your citizen
spouse during the 3 previous years.

3. Must be physically present in the U.S.

4. Must not be absent from the U.S. for a continuous period of more
than six months during the periods for which continuous
residence is required.

5. Must be a person of good moral character. If you have arrests or
convictions, consult with an attorney to determine eligibility.

6. Must be attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution and be
well-disposed to the good order and happiness of the U.S.

7. Must be willing to:

a. bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law;

b. perform noncombat service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; and

c. perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by law.

8. Must demonstrate:

a. a basic ability to read, write and understand the English
language; and

b. knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of United States history and its form of government.

The English language requisite does not apply to:

a. persons who are over 50 years of age and whom have been lawful permanent residents for 20 years; or

b. persons who are over 55 years of age and whom have been lawful permanent residents for 15 years. These individuals may be interviewed in their native language.
